Kids Matisse Art

Channel your inner Matisse and discover the joy of drawing with bold colors and playful shapes! This immersive class will transport you to the vibrant world of Henri Matisse. We'll delve into his signature style, where simplified and colorful forms dance across the paper.

This is your chance to ignite your creativity and learn techniques to draw and paint like the master himself.  This four class series can be continued and/or accompanied by a field trip to the Portland Art Museum for the upcoming Monet to Matisse exhibition opening June 8, 2024.

What to Expect:

• Dive into the Matisse Method: We'll begin by delving into Matisse's artistic philosophy and techniques. We'll discuss his use of negative space, pattern, and color harmony to create a sense of balance and energy.
• Warm Up Your Drawing Muscles: Through a series of drawing exercises, we will explore basic shapes and lines – the building blocks of Matisse's artwork.
• Exploring Simplification: Learn how to break down complex objects into simple shapes, just like Matisse did. We'll practice translating still life objects, self portraits, figures, or landscapes into bold, expressive compositions.
• Color Explosion!: Get ready to unleash your inner colorist! We'll experiment with a variety of materials like crayons, markers, colored pencils and paint to study Matisse's vibrant palette and discover the power of color in creating mood and emotion.
• Cut & Compose: Channel Matisse's famous "cut-out" technique! We'll create playful collages using colored paper, cutting out shapes and experimenting with different compositions.
