Transforming a photograph into a painting is a creative journey that blends digital technology with traditional artistry. Through a combination of Photoshop editing and hand painting techniques, I craft an original work that resonates with my artistic process, particularly as I navigate layers and memory. I primarily work with clients throughout the Pacific Northwest, but I also have worked elsewhere.
The process often begins with a photograph that I capture myself, or it may originate from a client’s selection. Once I have the image, I either use the digital version or scan the original photo to begin my work. This initial step involves editing the photograph in software like Photoshop or Lightroom. Here, I enhance specific elements, improve the overall composition, or address particular aspects that the client wishes to highlight. This digital manipulation is crucial as it sets the stage for the subsequent creative transformation.
After editing, I convert the photograph into a sketch or a watercolor art piece, serving as a foundational guide for the painting. Once I have this sketch, I print it out and begin the painting process. I utilize a blend of materials, including ink, watercolor, and acrylic paint, which allows for a rich interplay of textures and colors. My approach often involves layering different hues; I apply multiple layers in some areas while intentionally leaving others less saturated or more subdued.
One of the aspects I enjoy most is the incorporation of abstraction within the painting. I thoughtfully decide where to introduce more abstract elements, creating a dynamic visual experience that invites the viewer to engage with the work on multiple levels. I strive to ensure that the painting isn’t confined to a single style, offering a varied and textured look that captures attention.
The surfaces I choose for my paintings also contribute to their unique character. While I frequently work on high-quality watercolor paper, I also enjoy using canvas and wrapped canvas, which can further enhance the dimensionality of the artwork. Each piece I create not only reflects the initial photograph but also embodies my artistic exploration, resulting in a final work that is rich in layers, emotion, and visual intrigue. The combination of personal memory and the physicality of the painting process allows me to create pieces that resonate deeply with both myself and the viewers.
